Local Area Activities

THE TEXAS TROPICS:
Stretching nearly 100 miles from Rio Grande City in the west to the beaches in the Gulf of Mexico in the east, and running parallel along the Mexican border, the Rio Grande Valley provides a fun and affordable winter escape. Not only do people come from all over the U.S. and Canada for sunshine, swimming pools and palm trees, they also appreciate how far their dollars go in the Texas Tropics, compared to other winter destinations such as Arizona and Florida See www.valleychamber.com and www.riograndevalley.com for more information.

DINING OUT:
Retirees on fixed incomes are pleasantly surprised to discover that they can get great dinners for less than $10.00. There is a wide array of dining choices in the Valley. Best known for authentic Mexican fare as well as Tex-Mex, diners can choose from delicious combination plates, featuring tacos, enchiladas, rice and beans for less than $5.00, to first class service on a candle-lit garden patio at one the area’s many highly rated restaurants, where a memorable evening can be yours for under $30.00.

For down home Texas cooking, be sure not to miss eating barbeque. Slow cooked for hours, and smothered in smoky, tangy sauce, Texas barbeque meats fall off the bone, and melt in your mouth.

FORE FUN:
Golfer’s will have a hard time finding more affordable links anywhere! Municipal courses in the Valley offer great value www.valleychamber.com (go to visitor guide, then Golf). A round of golf can be played for as little as $11.00. For a real treat golfers can splurge and play one of two PGA qualifying championship courses at the elegant Valley International Country Club in Brownsville. The 18 challenging holes of this private club, can be played for $50.00, including your cart rental.

SHAKE A LEG
Visitors and residents alike have discovered square dancing in the Rio Grande Valley. Its’ popularity has resulted in McAllen Texas being regarded as the unofficial square dancing capital of the world. Two-hour dance sessions can be found throughout the Valley. See www.wintertexans.com (go to events). Sessions run from sunup to sundown, making square dancing accessible for all its devotees.

FEATHERED FRIENDS:
More than 500 species of birds migrate annually to the Rio Grande Valley. This gives bird lovers a unique opportunity to view a wide variety of species in their natural habitat. Just west of McAllen visitors will find the World Birding Center headquarters in Bensen State Park www.worldbirdingcenter.org .

VIVA MEXICO:
The Rio Grande Valley’s proximity to Mexico affords visitors unique cultural opportunities. Whether you choose to visit the sprawling historic city of Matamoros with its impressive colonial architecture, art galleries and opera house, or the quaint border town of Progresso Nueva, with its colorful shops and restaurants, you will be amazed at the diversity and flavor of our neighbors to the south. See: www.gotomexico.net .

SURFS’ UP:
At the northeast end of the Rio Grande Valley and only about a 30 minute drive from Brownsville, you can stroll down one of the longest continuous beaches in the nation. South Padre Island is a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico that boasts a 30 mile long beach. If it’s adventure that you want – it all here: surfing, sail boarding, and fishing all beckon. For those less active lifestyles, sipping a tropical drink under a straw-thatched roof, watching a glorious sunset, may be just as breath-taking. See: www.sopadre.com .
